November Profile - JV

November Profile: JV

How did you get started?
In the early 90's I was a professional hip hop dancer; part of a team that performed at events and danced in videos. After years of "interpreting" the beat with my body, my hunger to "create" it kept growing and growing. Then, in '94, I saw my first live electronic show, Moby at the Bomb Factory. It changed everything for me.

From there, I would purchase my first synth workstation and spend endless amounts of time creating beats, patterns, melodies, and layers. Inspired by artists such as Orbital, Moby, BT, Chemical Brothers, Paradigm Shift, and other non-DJ acts, my early creations were all over the place.

The next phase came in '99 when I started to purchase vinyl. The "plan" was to merely buy tracks so I could study other artists... Of course, shortly thereafter, I was totally hooked on DJing! So with my new addiction to wax, I naturally started to shape my productions into more of a palatable format for the dance floor. It was all starting to come together: through my own creations in music, I now had people dancing.

My first record release came in 2002 with "Into the Blue" on New York-based Fade Records. After that, I would meet Red Eye and together we would write and release a series of tunes/remixes that did quite well, receiving solid support in the then booming world of tribal/progressive house. I would also meet Maetrik who took me under his wing and showed me new studio techniques that would push me to the next level. Around the same time I was also discovering the converged genre of "Tech House" for the first time. Artists like Terry Francis, Grant Dell, Asad Rizvi were all speaking to my thirst for new sounds and fused styles. This was my new niche.

Since then I have gone on to release over a dozen records on a number of labels from around the world; some as solo projects, others as collaborations. Most recently, I achieved a long term goal of landing a track on a commercially released CD ‚ Hernan Cattaneo's Renaissance Masters compilation.
