Growing up in East Texas and starting his dj career in 1987 in a Ft. Worth
club called Bauhaus playing what at the time was called 'modern music'
(industrial/goth/alternative) Terry Sims soon began what would become his 18
year imprint on Dallas nightlife. Starting with the departure of 'Go Go'
Mike DuPriest at Club Clearview and with the help of another djs
recommendation from Bauhaus, Terry started at Club Clearview where he held
shop from 88-91.
Initially playing an eclectic mix of industrial dance before bands went on
he eventually was able to move into the Blacklight Room in 1988 where he
championed the then unheard of format of hip hop in Deep Ellum which they
permitted on a trial basis. Quite a change from today but like today with
the problems inherent with bad crowds, Club Clearview chose to kill the
night after a succesful run although many years later.
Luckily, about this time Terry began working in some local industrial hip
hop projects most notably ITT (International Thief Thief) --- very akin to
Consolidated or Disposable Heroes of Hiphoprisy as well as other projects
with former members of Decadent Dub Team and with some who would later form
the group Mad Flava (Kasaan and Cold Cris and 1990 U.S, DMC Champ Baby G) as
well as writing reviews for the local mag, the Vibe in between.
Then came his groundbreaking night on Wednesdays @ SOA with created Dallas'
first Acid Jazz night incorporating live instruments with vocalists and MC's
over faded out hip hop beats. This was unusual at the time and cemented his
association with pushing for new sounds. Later, Terry left to dj @ State Bar
in Exposition Park for 2 years and then eventually moved to Pittsburgh to
refreshen his focus after a tiring steady diet of 3-4 nights playing weekly
here in Dallas.
While in Pittsburgh, he began his other important career as a Graphic
Designer while hosting a radio public access show focusing on Jazz/Acid
Jazz. In the process, he switched his tastes to a more rare groove/funk/soul
vibe which would later inspire his current production.
Moving back to Dallas and having his son, Jordan, shifted his gears to his
steady Graphic Design career until hooking with his old mates Miles Morris
and Skin from Hydroponic Sound System which firmly sent him on a path to
bang his own beats.
