In order to protect you from people stealing your nick and impersonating you please take some time to do the following once you connect to chat.

First make sure to register your nickname.

! You do this by typing:

• /msg nickserv register <password>
• replace <password> with the password you desire.

Now you will be registered with nickserv which is basically a computer controlled program that will ensure noone else takes your nickname. Now every time you connect to chat you will have to identify yourself to nickserv so that it knows that you is really you. You will do that by using your password.

! Each time you connect type in the following:

• /msg nickserv identify <password>
• replace <password> with your password.

of course, replace <password> with the password you decided on above when you registered your nick.

Next you have to protect your nick from stealing. This way if someone tries to use your nick they will be kicked off chat after one minute unless they are authorized.

! To turn on the nick protection type:

• /msg nickserv set kill on

Now, if anyone tries to use your nickname they will be disconnected after one minute. This also means that when you connect you need to verify yourself with nickserv as described above within one minute or you will be kicked off too. One minute is plenty of time to identify yourself however and you shouldn't have any problems.
